A disease registry is a special database that contains information about people diagnosed with a specific type of disease. Registries can be used to closely monitor the health care process to detect potential problems and to ultimately achieve better results for patients. On July 2, 2024, President Biden signed the National Plan to End Parkinson\u2019s Act into law!

Now that the bill has been signed into law, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will establish the National Parkinson\u2019s Project, a first-ever federal initiative to prevent and cure Parkinson\u2019s disease, treat its symptoms and slow or stop its progression. It will also establish a federal advisory council that will provide recommendations and guidance for making progress against Parkinson\u2019s disease and atypical parkinsonism.

MJFF Staff are currently working to get the Harmonizing Environmental Analyses and Launching Therapeutic Hubs to Yield Bolstered Research and Innovation in Neurological Science Act (H.R. 9233), or HEALTHY BRAINS Act re-introduced in the 119th Congress.

If passed, the HEALTHY BRAINS Act would create a Centers of Excellence grant program within the National Institute of Health to investigate how environmental risk factors, such as exposure to harmful chemicals, contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson\u2019s and atypical parkinsonism.

It will provide, for the first time, a concerted and permanent federal effort to examine potential causes of neurodegenerative disease.

Elections are a great opportunity to spotlight issues impacting the Parkinson\u2019s community. Candidates for public office, as well as voters, need to hear our community\u2019s stories to put a face to Parkinson\u2019s disease and show them what government can do to improve the quality of life for people living with Parkinson\u2019s and their families. Whether they\u2019re new or returning candidates, many will be holding campaign events and town halls this year, providing the perfect opportunity to ask questions and help candidates understand what Parkinson\u2019s means to you.

Since its founding in 2000, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson\u2019s Research (MJFF) has funded nearly $2 billion in Parkinson\u2019s research around the globe, partnering with researchers, the biopharma industry, patients and philanthropists to accelerate urgently needed solutions to unmet medical needs.

MJFF has dedicated 13 years to building, strengthening and expanding the infrastructure for its landmark clinical study, The Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI). Members of Congress hold regular online and in-person town hall meetings and other public events in their state or district, and you can attend them for free.

To find an event:

Check your senators\u2019 and representative\u2019s websites
Call their offices to ask about when there might be an event in your area
Check out Town Hall Project to see if your members of Congress are promoting any public events

When you attend an event:

Bring your friends, family, and others to the event with you. Having several people there asking about Parkinson\u2019s disease will be memorable for the member of Congress and their staff.
Feel free to introduce yourself to your senator or representative or their staffer and tell them why you\u2019re there and remember to request their support the National Plan to End Parkinson\u2019s Act.
Ask for their business card or email address so you can send a follow-up email or phone call to tell them your personal story.
